People often consider devolution to the English regions as dead in the water after the no vote in the North.
I would agree that devolution to these artifical government zones is a non starter but what about the Celtic nation of Cornwall and the natural historic regions of England such as Yorkshire? Have the English public been consulted about such an alternative. Why not asymetric devolution as is found in Spain.
Don’t forget that Cornwall produced a petition of 50,000 signatures calling for devolution.
As a guess, I'd say Cornwall would need to start electing Mebyon Kernow MPs before a Cornish Assembly could be taken seriously.
There should be devolution to Cornwall and England's shires and Counties.Cornwall was offered a unitary authority covering the whole of Cornwall but the people have rejected it as they have through out England.
I'm not sure what Cornubian is suggesting by a stannary, but England is not likely to answer the west lothian question and then have a Tamar question pop up.
The people of Kernow rejected the unitary authority as it was on the same lines as a Cornish Assembly and not what they wanted. It meant they would lose the two tier system, something which is needed in government. Despite the no vote, the council are intent on pushing it through anyway, so much for democracy.
I should have said, WASN'T on the same lines as a Cornish Assembly, and not what they wanted.
Ordovicius,
All of Cornwall is Liberal Democrat, our MP's and 'county' council.
The liberal Democrats campaigned on the promise of calling for a devolved Cornish Assembly.
They have stabbed us in the back on that one.
Anyway here is a plug for my blog, The Cornish Democrat: http://thecornishdemocrat.blogspot.com/
That's hardly surprising. As a party the Lib Dems want a lot of things, which short of a Hung Parliament they're not going to get. Cornish devolution is hardly going to figure prominently. On the other hand, even electing one MK MP will get Westminster's attention.
