Pressure On Rhodri Glyn

Translation of a post by Vaughan Roderick:

I don't want to return to this subject too often but there have been a few developments in the brawl concerning the Welsh languagew press. Whilst Cymdeithas yr Iaith are organising a pètition calling on the government to put aside a sufficient sum of money specifically to establish a daily newspaper the Tories have also been adding to the pressure. In a news conference today Nick Bournereturned to the subject saying that somewhere between six hundred thousand and a million pounds is needed to establish a newspaper and that the Tories will be pushing for that.

In the meantime there are rumours amongst assembly journalists that Trinity Mirror are preparing a bid for funding. It'spossible that this bid is based on an extended version of the Daily Post's "Herald Cymraeg" supplement with the Western Mail also distributing it. We shall see.

To me the idea of a 'supplement' seems like an excellent idea...

Ordo,

From what i can gather you arent a 'socialist' but one would assume you support increased state support for the language? Where do you stand on the WAG propping up what appears to be a commercial unviable project?

Please note i am not having a go and the words 'assume' and 'appears' are important.

Pardon me if I appear a little cynical about the Tories on this one. On the day that they slated London for temporarily nationalising Northern Rock, they openly support what would effectively be a publicly owned newspaper in Wales. Whatever your opinions on whether RGT should have funded Y Byd, you have to admire the Tories for the sheer bare faced cheek.

My first experience of the Tories real opinion of the Welsh language was in the referendum count in 97 in Swansea Guildhall. I was standing with a few friends from the 'yes' camp who were chatting to themselves in Welsh. A prominant Swansea Tory and 'no' campaigner came up to us and exclaimed, "Speak British". My friend agreed to his demands and replied, "Certainly. Why don't you fxxk off?" The conversation ended there.

Very little since has convinced me that the attitude of their members and core support has changed whatsoever.

Ian,

With respect, you are suffering from what i call 'anecdotal evidence syndrome'...

If you require further evidence, then ask yourself how much Welsh the Tory candidates used on any of their election leaflets in last year's Assembly elections; specifically outside North and West Wales.

The answer is next to nothing, becuase they have little interest in using it and saw no reason in doing so due to the relatively few votes they would gain from using it, rather than making use of the space to get more over through English.

However, credit where it's due. Without Thatcher and Redwood, Labour would not have supported a 'yes' vote in 97. That's the ultimate irony. 18 years of Tory rule delivered devolution.

why has this blog simply become a translation mouthpiece for Vaughan Roderick.

Are you no longer posting yourself?

a welsh language supplement, (probably supported by Plaid Cymru im sure) and people wonder why the Western Mail and Daily Post have no credibility apart from being political mouth pieces for Labour and PC, how about free press in welsh and english and online now there's a radical idea.

"On the day that they slated London for temporarily nationalising Northern Rock"

NRK is a bank which has been behaving rather irresponsibly offering 125% mortgages. It's now going tits up and the tax-payer is now called in to support to the tune of over 3,000 pounds for every single one of us. The 100 billion pounds or so to sort out NRK can't be compared to the 600 k needed to help the Welsh Daily. Plaid Cymru had it coming to them and well done the Tories.
